The Household

The Household of Faith

Galatians 6:10 (NKJV) Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

The original language is always an interesting study. Let’s take a look and see what we can find.

As we have opportunity, kairos, the time, or at the opportune or right time, and for a fixed and limited period of time, let us do, ergazomai, work, commit ourselves to do, good, agathos, that which is beneficial and honorable, to all men, pas, especially, de malista, but most of all and above all, unto, pros, to the advantage of, and with regard to, them who are of the household, oikeios, belonging to the intimate family of faith, pistis, that is, those who are true believers in Jesus as the Messiah, Lord, and Savior through whom we obtain right standing with God.

We are to, within the limits of our ability and resources, do that which is “beneficial and honorable” to everyone that we can. This verse also teaches us that our first priority is to those who are believers in Jesus Christ. In other words, we are to take care of one another first and foremost.

Our call to meet the needs of the ungodly only comes after we meet the needs of the faithful. This thinking runs contrary to what most “Christian” ministries teach and practice. The same concept is found in the admonition that a Christian should take care of his own family before he tries to take care of others.

1 Timothy 5:8 (NKJV) But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Get over the guilt and condemnation that if you don’t personally feed the whole world that you are, somehow, not a good Christian. Your liberality is dependent upon your capability.

2 Corinthians 8:12 (NKJV) For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.

Do the best you can with what you have and don’t neglect the family of God nor your family.
