House of God . . .
Once again, I have had my attention drawn to Genesis 28, and Jacob’s encounter with the Lord:
And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran. And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. (Genesis 28:10-15)
Ever since we had a similar encounter here on our property, nestled in the Northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, I have been drawn to ponder the significance of such an event.
We can see that there are several things that took place:
- Heaven opened
- The angel’s were active and present
- The Lord was present
- a covenant was being established by God, and
- an exchange was taking place.
Today, I would like to direct our attention to what was then stated:
And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not. And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven (Genesis 28:16-17).
The House of God is the Gate of Heaven.
Gate of Heaven . . .
Jesus came to earth, so that man could go to heaven. Jesus became man, so that man could become like Him.
Jesus said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man” (John 1:51).
Jesus was the “House of God,” and, therefore, the “Gate of Heaven.” This can be seen at His baptism and at the Mount of Transfiguration:
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (Mat. 3:16-17)
And (He) was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him (Mat. 17:2-3)
Now, you and I are “The House of God” and, therefore, the “Gate of Heaven.”
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? (Corinthians 3:16; 2 Corinthians 6:16)
We have been given the awesome responsibility to bring heaven to earth (Mat.6:10; Luke 11:2) and live out the prophetic promise of the Lord in this generation:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father (John 14:12).
This will bring to pass the words of Haggai: The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts. . . (Haggai 2:9)
