The idea of a free enterprise system is not a man conceived concept. The Bible supports personal ownership. Government was never seen as the source of man’s provision. God was always seen as the one who “gives the power to get wealth” and under His guidance man was to labor and gain for himself and his family.
One new testament example of the right of personal ownership was found in the story of Ananias and Sapphira found in the Book of Acts, Chapter 5.
1 ¶ But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
They did not die because they withheld anything of what they had gained from selling their land. They died because they lied to the Holy Ghost. You can see in verse 4 that they had every right to keep, or to give, whatever they wanted of their own possessions.
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power?
In Matthew 20:15 the idea of ownership is plainly stated. Just because some thought the owner unfair did not change his right to do with his own what he wished.
Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’ Matthew 20:15 (NKJV)
The American ideal of free enterprise is a biblical value that allows mankind to follow their God given dreams and to achieve them with His help.
Don’t ever give your freedom away to the tyranny of communism or socialism in any form. Let freedom ring!
Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NKJV)
