John Onyema, one of my Elder’s here at Wellspring Church of All Nations, said, “If you have no expectations, you will never be disappointed.” When it comes to giving or lending this is a great piece of advice.
Our verse today gives us the purity of a caring, giving, godly heart. Whatever we do by way of kindness or benevolence should never be done with a thought of reciprocation.
Those corrupted by sin are incapable of, or not interested in, giving but are only focused on what they can get. Expecting anything different will only bring disappointment and, worse yet, bitterness.
God’s compassion is toward all and if we have His nature in us we should be the same. His sun shines on the just and the unjust alike. May our benevolence be of the same compassionate nature.
Besides, God always returns what we give to the poor. Let our expectation be in the Giver of every good gift and not in the receiver.
