Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD. Proverbs 18:22
My wife, Sharon, and I met when we were 16 years old. That was 1957 when she was a Rose Parade Princess and I was anything but an acceptable match for such a beautiful, brilliant, and popular young lady.
The boy’s Vice-Principal and the Assistant Police Chief encouraged me to join the Army in 1960 so I dropped out of High School and joined the Army. It was the best thing that could possibly have happened to me at that stage of my life.
I returned from my tour of duty with six months of my three year enlistment left to serve and she was still there waiting for me. She had finished Nursing School and we decided that we should get married right away.
The greatest joy of our lives degraded as we became involved in the occult and saturated ourselves with whiskey. The High School sweethearts were headed for the disaster of divorce.
But, God had other plans. Several friends had become born-again and took us on as their project. They prayed for us and witnessed to us every chance they got. We treated them terribly but they didn’t give up. Their persistence paid off and we both became followers of Jesus Christ.
He delivered us from demons, alcohol, cigarettes, and all manner of profane things as only He can. Yes, Jesus still saves, heals and delivers!
We have had the most wonderful, exciting life imaginable and are more in love with each other now than ever before. God has, indeed, given me a wife perfectly adapted and suited for me! We are fulfilling the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God living as one flesh.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Genesis 2:24 (Mt 19:5)
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Matthew 19:6
And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. Mark 10:8
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. Ephesians 5:31
God is good! We are looking forward to many more years together as the Lord allows.
If you life is coming undone, if your marriage is falling apart, do what we did. Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. There is nothing too messed up for Him to fix.
